about
It all started last fall at Magic Room Gallery, Boston’s infamous underground music space: Mei Ohara and Sinking Feeling met during a private JUNGLE UP RECORDS showcase.
During Sinking Feeling’s set, a haunting electronic song called out to Mei. She swiftly contacted the EDM artist and effortlessly added her ethereal magic to it, bringing the new track “Seem Alive” to life with guttural strings and poignant vocals.
The single will be SF’s debut release with J.U.R., as well as the first of multiple collaborations between him and the other label’s artists. SF has been consistently releasing a stream of output, and the media dubbed him “an energizer bunny on ketamine.” (Although, most would agree this is an elegant break away from his usual glitchy persona.)
Youtube’s favorite music and video producer, Andrew Huang, is a fan. He says “I always look forward to new sounds from Sinking Feeling.”
He would know: Huang has improvised alongside him at his personal studio.
Revealing meaning behind the track, Mei has shared, “‘Seem Alive” is about the tension between believing you are apathetic and knowing you are not; the denial of emotional depth that is set under a scorching spotlight by love and heartache and heartbreak; the desire to become the reflection of others to prove that you too are as alive as you want to seem.”
Mei goes on to describe her music as a “marriage of distortion, futuristic beats, and spacey soundscapes.”
When asked to comment on the creation of the song, SF astutely responded “...writing the song was part of the journey of getting to know the Digitone,” which he’s used while writing the majority of his newest material.
Stay tuned for his upcoming album, set to be announced later in the year.
lyrics
Lyrics:
I want to be the kind of person who loves unconditionally
But truthfully I’ve never been more distantly aware of me
I used my ace to fill the heart of someone with no empathy
Your need to be forced into the light is simply just too much for me
Anger, built from watching love
Anger, built from not loving full
Anger, for not being just like you
Anger, with myself, that I don’t seem alive
I am the skins of apathy and have the flesh of soulfulness
And honestly, the soul is growing much too ripe with softness
I am the broken frame around the broken panes of painful glass
I can no longer lose myself in cleaning your detritus
Guilty, from ignoring love
Guilty, because of not loving full
Guilty, for not being just like you
Guilty, that I never quite seem alive
